27 September 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the start of the eruption
of the Capelinhos Volcano, at the western tip of the island of Faial, Azores. The commemorations of this deeply influential set of events are under way in the Azores and among the Azorean diaspora.
The commemorations are intended to perpetuate its memory and that of its effects on the island and its population, and allow the public to play an active role. Throughout the events, the focus has been not only on socio-economic aspects but also on its environmental impact and effect on tourism.
The volcano generated an important wave of emigration, and this is reflected
in local celebrations in the West and East coasts of the United States of America, as well as in Canada and mainland Portugal.
The Boston Portuguese Festival, in collaboration with Clube Faialense of Cambridge, has great pleasure in associating itself with the event by promoting a commemorative reunion and buffet dinner. A documentary will be shown about the Capelinhos Vulcano and the dramatic, deeply significant half century of history that ensued.
The event is an opportunity to learn about the volcano, and make or re-visit acquaintances among the many who found themselves affected by the phenomenon, not least the sizeable communities who emmigrated to Massachusetts.
Special thanks to Jaime Silva for organizing the event, with the support of Clube Faialense, Cambridge.
Documentary by José Serra, courtesy of RTP-Açores.
Special performances: Tuna e grupo coral de Peabody; Luís Gomes.
